Nancy Haskell - Artist
I have been involved in the art media through photography and painting for many years. I started on my artistic path through painting in 1991. I am self taught, although participated in a 3 week intensive course at Toronto School of Art associated with Ryerson College.
The mediums that I prefer to use are oil and soft pastel. I do waiver back and forth between these two mediums however I like the sensual feeling of soft pastel. Colour and texture in a primitive and free composition seem to be my style.
My subject matter has changed over the years. My still lifes are usually a room settings with motion, curtains flying, diagonal lines, colourful images portraying a story, seem to have been my most successful. The other passion that I seem to have is faces of women showing attitude and character. I do not paint from a model or a particular subject matter but rather from memory of happenings in my life. I have as of late, been trying to direct my work more to the abstract using a pallet knife instead of brush. We will see how that goes.
My work has been shown at the Toronto City Hall Outdoor show, Key West Fl, Miami Florida, Boulder Colorado, Denver Colorado, Fountain Hills Azizona, the Niagara area and other Ontario locations. I also have had a one woman show at Rodman Hall in St Catharines Ontario and The PumpHouse in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
The photographers in my life have been a great influence and support for me.
