Katerina Fretwell (she, her) is a self-taught artist who took classes
from her aunt, Sculptor Ruth Wagner Wink, three years in highschool, The
Masters School, Dobbs Ferry, New York, and 10 years in a life drawing
group and 10 years in a local art group when she lived in Parry Sound,
Ontario. She joined SCAA and Poets & Painters shortly after moving to
St. Catharines in April, 2023 and loves the stimulation and camaraderie.
Fretwell's art ranges from portraits to abstracts to stylized land and
seascapes. Her preferred medium is acrylic but in her water series
includes netting and in her manikin series, sharpies. She won first
prize, Watercolour, Artfocus Group Show, Toronto, 2001. Her art resides
in Copenhagen where she had a solo show, taught and read her poetry,
Tokyo, and across Canada and the United States. She enjoys commemorating
nature, capturing essences in portraiture of people and wildlife, and
playing with colours, textures and sparkles. Tom Thompson's work
inspired a series of paintings. And Fretwell painted two portraits of
George Elliott Clarke's First Literary Salon of 12 poets and his Second
Literary Salon of 11 poets, including Fretwell. She has had solo shows
in Toronto and around Ontario.
