May Meeting 2025: 'Reflections on Drawing: Research, Creation & Curatorial Projects' by Amanda Burk MFA

Amanda Burk is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Visual Arts
in the Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts at Brock University,
where she teaches drawing and studio foundations. Burk is an artist, educator, and
researcher. Her own studio practice is centred in drawing and her research interests
focus on contemporary Canadian drawing and studio-based pedagogy. Her artwork
has been exhibited both nationally and internationally and can be found in such
collections as: the Thunder Bay Art Gallery, Cobra to Contemporary (Netherlands),
and the City of Toronto. Burk has worked as an Associate Researcher with the
NSCAD University Drawing Lab and collaborated on the study, The Effects of
Language and Schema on Drawing Performance, as well as the publication,
Researching the Teaching of Drawing, published by Vernon Press (2022). From 2011
- 2016, Burk ran Line Gallery in North Bay, Ontario, as a curatorial research project,
producing 25 solo exhibitions featuring the work of drawing artists from across
Canada, and in 2016 was asked to curate an exhibition for the Art Gallery of
Sudbury, titled, Assemble: Five years of contemporary Canadian drawing. Burk
received her MFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and her
undergraduate degree from the University of Waterloo.
