A Career in Visual Art – A Missed Opportunity?
Abstract of article # 22 from the series - 'Passions of a Global Hotelier'
Published in Sunday Island Newspaper on 2024 October 27th
At 17, I planned to join the renowned Heywood Art School in Colombo, yet ultimately chose a path in hotel management, joining Ceylon Hotel School. My passion for art remained constant, and in 1993, inspired by the celebrated Sri Lankan visual artist Cavaliere Tilake Abeysinghe, who had a permanent gallery at Mount Lavinia Hotel where I served as General Manager, I organized my first art exhibition titled '3 Generations'. This event showcased 75 works of my father, my eldest son Marlon, and myself. In 2011, marking my father's 90th birthday, we held a sequel, '3 Generations II', at the Colombo Public Library, featuring 90 paintings by ten family members.
My dedication to art led me to study under renowned Sri Lankan artists and pursue studio training at the University of Guyana. I expanded my education with courses at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Jamaica and completed Fine Art and Painting programs at George Brown College School of Design in Canada. Beginning in 2024, I will devote myself fully to my work as an artist and writer. More information on my upcoming exhibitions, including my 50th exhibition, can be found here: online.fliphtml5.com/idqgz/abzm.
