The St. Catharines Art Association meets at the Trillium United Church, 415 Linwell Rd, St. Catharines - at 7 p.m. on each fourth Tuesday of the month.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our meeting on Tuesday April 22, 2025 will be a Double Header.
In sports Double Headers are typically events in which two games or contests are played in succession at the same venue. They are popular because audiences don't want to miss either portion of the presentation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At our Double Header, the first part of the program, starting at 7 p.m. will be the Announcement of the 2025 SCAA Art Scholarships Awards to outstanding high school visual arts students in our community.
The goal of our annual scholarship program is to foster artistic expression in emerging artists and encourage their pursuit of excellence in visual arts. SCAA has invited students from each of the eight St. Catharines Secondary Schools to participate and be considered for SCAA Art Scholarships. Each participating school was asked to nominate one visual arts student for the school, who fulfils all of the following scholarship criteria set by SCAA:
* deserving student in good standing;
* minimum 70% in a senior visual art course;
* pursuing a post-secondary college/university visual arts program; and
* presented an artist portfolio that exemplifies community and artistic merit.
This program has been undertaken by SCAA for several years but underwent a revitalization and somewhat of a modernization, under the guidance of member Mandy Tam-Luk who also has served for the past year as the SCAA Webmaster.
Mandy will lead the presentations and we can expect several visitors, including participants and possibly their Art teachers. In addition All nominees are invited to attend and will receive a 2025/2026 SCAA Membership for their participation.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The second portion of the Doubleheader will feature Tamara Sutton who will spark interest in Encaustic painting. Tamara kindly provided the outline below:
Tamara was born and raised in St. Catharines, she is a Niagara-based self-taught Encaustic Artist.
Encaustic is an ancient painting medium of beeswax, damar resin and pigment. She began working with Encaustics in 2012 after studying under artist Jan Yates. Building on her understanding of Encaustics, Tamara has taken many online courses including; Painting with Fire (26 different artists), Learn to Burn (Alicia Tormey). In 2023 she traveled to Ireland to the The Essence of Mulranny Art retreat to learn from artist Regina Quinn.
Her works are inspired by nature and the beauty of the Niagara Region. Tamara loves the diversity of the Encaustic medium which can be handled in numerous ways. She retired from her corporate position in 2023 and is now pursuing Art as a second career. Her first solo art exhibition in St. Catharines in 2023 was a success, selling 11 paintings.
Tamara is a Board member of the St. Catharines Art Association, and currently serves as Treasurer.
If you are interested in learning how to "Paint with Fire", come on out to our April 22nd meeting for her demo!

This Meeting invitation for April 22, is extended to our broader mailing list, which includes former members and those who have expressed an interest in Art, who we hope might join us or rejoin us in membership. (David L.)
